Short change artists in Langley

File # 2021-11627
Langley RCMP would like to warn retail businesses to an old tactic that has raised its’ ugly head. The ploy is known to be perpetrated by ‘short change artists’.
Several of these transactions took place at Langley WalMart over a three-day period.
In these instances, two female suspects make small amount purchases and pay with cash. The employee provides the change for the transaction and the suspect pockets a portion of the cash. The suspect then hands the change back to the cashier and requests that she break the larger bills. This process could be repeated several times and the suspect(s) generally get away with $200-$500 in cash before the employee catches on.
The investigation into these thefts is ongoing but in the interim, employers may want to caution their staff to be on the lookout for this scheme.
