Update #54 on police enforcement of injunction order in Fairy Creek Watershed

Lake Cowichan

2021-07-19 19:45 PDT

Police enforcement of the BC Supreme Court injunction order in the Fairy Creek Watershed area continued today, on July 19, 2021 in the Reid Mainline area.

During the course of the day, individuals were found to be locked in various devices and actively blocking the road. A total of 4 individuals were arrested, 2 for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court) and 2 for obstruction. One of the individuals arrested self-released from their locking device and was arrested without issue. All arrested persons were processed and released in Port Renfrew.

At least 10 individuals also requested police assistance in helping them leave the protest location subject to today’s enforcement. Officers helped transport them and their gear out of the area.

I visited with a number of protesters today to once again explain the RCMP’s role and our intentions to enforce the BC Supreme Court injunction. I continue to have concerns about the conditions, circumstances, and unsafe situations some are willing to place themselves in, especially given the heat and local fire danger ratings , says C/Supt. John Brewer, Gold Commander of the RCMP Community-Industry Response Group. Those contemnors who continue to breach the injunction will be arrested and anyone wishing to leave the area will continue to receive support and assistance from the RCMP.

Since enforcement began, the RCMP have now arrested 446 individuals; at least 28 of whom were previously arrested. Of the total arrested to date, 335 were for breaching the injunction (civil contempt of court), 86 were for obstruction, 10 were for mischief, 3 were for breaching their release conditions, 4 for assaulting a police officer, 1 for counselling to resist arrest, and 1 wanted Canada-wide on warrants issued by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

All news releases on the Fairy Creek Watershed police enforcement issued to date can be found on the Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment website.
